Open-Level Contact Improvisation—Exploring Self in Gravity and Duet
Oct 15: 3:30 - 6:30
Oct 16: 4:00 - 6:00
$70 (register by Oct 11)
Contact Improvisation (CI) is an improvised dance practice based on the communication between two or more moving bodies attuning to the intrinsic movement principles of gravity, momentum and presence. CI dances can be subtle and meditative, athletic and wild, and everything in between, making it a unique form that enables literally anybody to safely practice joyful disorientation and sensory connection. CI is widely used as a choreographic tool in contemporary dance and is a potent complement to all physical practices including the pedestrian movements of our everyday lives.

Using self-inquiry and somatic investigation we will delve into our own understanding of Contact Improvisation. We ask the questions: What am I aware of? What intention springs from that awareness? How can I transform myself to yield to those intentions? Literally shaking and jostling the body and mind, we’ll explore moving with a partner through weight-sharing and word-sharing.

Prepare.Move.Dance.Witness: An Introduction to Movement Fundamentals
Nov 5: 3:30 - 6:30
Nov 6: 4:00 - 6:00
$70 (Register by Nov 1)

Movement Fundamentals is a movement paradigm for all ages and abilities to access and liberate the body as primary source and know themselves as Dance Artists. We will engage in “The Four Phases,” a framework for improvisation that facilitates movement awareness, ease, and artistry. In these sessions we will explore movement that is simultaneously meditative and imaginative, mindful and expressive, resulting in a fullness of experience for both body and mind, both individual and community. This is a practice that empowers the individual into imaginative and easeful movement, and cultivates compassion and intelligence in the community practicing it. Once learned, this practice can happen in a studio or in your kitchen, condensed into five minutes, or in an unfolding continuum throughout your day.
